A yak chew is cheese, not an offcut. Yak and cow milk is boiled down, pressed, smoked and dried until what is left is a block harder than most bones, with the lactose largely cooked out along the way.
It is for a determined chewer: the dog that gets through a pig ear in ninety seconds and looks up expecting another. Match the block to the dog rather than to its age. A small one in a large jaw is a swallowing risk, not a saving.
They are genuinely hard. A dog that has already cracked a tooth on a bone or an antler should not have one. For everyone else the block softens as it goes, and the last stub can be microwaved into a puff instead of thrown away. High in protein, under ten per cent fat, and the scraping does real work along the gum line, though it is no substitute for brushing.
Smell and mess: almost none of either. It does not grease the sofa and it does not announce itself from the next room, which is the reason it survives in a house with carpets.
