The guide

Which chew, which benefit?

Every chew on this site does something. Some scrub teeth, some buy you a quiet hour, some are gentle enough for a puppy or for a dog whose stomach objects to almost everything. This page sorts out which is which, so you can stop guessing and start choosing on purpose.

It also explains what the things actually are. Pizzle, paddywack, trachea, hoof: none of it means a thing until somebody tells you, and somehow nobody ever does.

Start here

Start with the problem, not the product

Nobody wakes up wanting a hoof. They wake up to the breath, the chewed skirting board, or a treat that was gone before they sat down. Find the one that sounds like your dog.

Bad breath

Their breath clears a room

Plaque is the culprit, and chewing is far and away the cheapest way to shift it. The hard stuff scrapes the tooth clean while your dog thinks it is having a lovely time.

Dental chews →
Destruction

The puppy is eating the skirting board

Puppies chew because they have to, not to spite you. Give them something that is meant to be destroyed, and softer than the grown-up stuff.

Puppy-safe chews →
Boredom

Gone in thirty seconds

If the treat is gone before you have sat down, you need something denser. A few of ours will keep a determined dog busy for well over an hour.

Long-lasting chews →
Upset stomach

Something always disagrees with them

Single-ingredient chews take the guesswork out of it. One protein, nothing else in the bag, so you can find the culprit by elimination rather than by hunch.

Hypoallergenic chews →
Weight

The vet mentioned the weight

Fat across our range runs from 0.1% to 37.8%, which is quite a spread. Stay at the low end and you can keep treating without undoing the vet's good work.

Low fat chews →
Stiffness

Slower on the stairs than they were

Cartilage, trachea and tendon carry the same compounds you would pay for in a joint supplement, except your dog is actually pleased to see them.

Joint care chews →
Dull coat

Scratching, or a coat that looks tired

Oily fish skins work from the inside out. Slow going, but it shows up in the coat within a few weeks.

Skin & coat chews →
Smell

You live in the house too

Some naturals genuinely reek. These are the ones you can hand over in a carpeted living room without opening a window.

Low-odour chews →

The fourteen benefits

What each health benefit actually means

Fourteen things a chew can genuinely do for your dog. What each one means in practice, which chews deliver it, and who it suits.

Chews firm enough to scrape plaque off the tooth while your dog gets on with enjoying itself.

Shop teeth
Why it works, and who it suits

Cleaning teeth is a mechanical business. A chew only works like a toothbrush if it is hard enough to abrade the tooth and lasts long enough to keep at it, which is why antler, hoof and yak sit at the top of the list and why something swallowed in a minute does nothing at all. One hard chew most days is the habit worth building. The back molars are where tartar starts. None of this replaces brushing, but it is the part your dog will not fight you over.

Dense chews that occupy a determined dog for an hour or more, rather than a minute.

Shop long-lasting
Why it works, and who it suits

How long a chew lasts comes down to how dense it is and how much of it there is. Antler and hoof are the hardest things we sell and will keep most dogs busy well past the hour. Pizzle and trachea sit in the middle. Ears and skins are a two-minute pleasure, and there is no shame in that. Size matters as much as type, so a big dog needs the big version of the same chew rather than a different one. Use this filter when you are buying peace and quiet rather than nutrition.

One protein, one ingredient, nothing added, so a reactive dog has far less to react to.

Shop hypoallergenic
Chews that do itSkinsEarsPizzlesStrips
Why it works, and who it suits

Most reactions are to something added rather than to the meat itself, and most supermarket treats have plenty of additions. A single-ingredient dried chew takes the variables away. If your dog reacts to chicken or beef, which are the usual suspects, move to something it has never met: rabbit, duck, goat, ostrich or fish. Run one protein at a time and give it a fortnight before you decide, because a week is not long enough to tell you anything.

High Protein

97 chews

Chews where crude protein passes a third of the dried weight, which is most of what we sell.

Shop high protein
Why it works, and who it suits

Air-drying takes the water out and leaves the protein behind, so a dried natural chew is a far denser source than anything baked or extruded. Nearly everything we sell qualifies, which tells you more about air-drying than it does about us. For an active dog that is simply good news. For a dog with kidney trouble, or one on a diet the vet set, it is worth a look at the numbers first, which is why crude protein, fat, ash and moisture are printed on every product page rather than kept to ourselves.

The top band, reaching 86.4% crude protein. Dried muscle, tendon and lean meat, and not much else.

Shop very high protein
Why it works, and who it suits

These are the leanest, most concentrated things we sell, and they are what to reach for with a working dog, a dog putting condition back on, or a fussy eater who needs persuading that food is interesting. The catch is that a lot of calories arrive in a very small package, so count them as part of the day's food rather than a freebie on top of it.

Low Fat

34 chews

The lean end of the range, where fat drops as low as 0.1%.

Shop low fat
Why it works, and who it suits

Fat across our range runs from 0.1% to 37.8%, which is an enormous spread, and it is the one number to look at if your dog needs to lose a bit or has had pancreatitis. Lean chews let you keep the ritual without the calories. And because a chew takes real time to get through, one of these usually satisfies a dog far better than a handful of biscuits inhaled in four seconds.

Fully digestible chews, often tripe or trachea, that go through without causing trouble.

Shop digestive
Why it works, and who it suits

The real question with any chew is what happens once it has been swallowed. Everything in this group breaks down properly in the gut, which is the main reason people moved away from rawhide in the first place. Tripe and trachea are the standouts, both given to dogs with unreliable stomachs long before anybody thought to market them. Introduce a new chew on its own and give it a couple of days before you add another.

Softer chews a puppy can work at without risking milk teeth or the adult ones coming through.

Shop puppy chews
Why it works, and who it suits

Puppies chew because they are teething and because they are working out what the world is made of. Give them something built for it and your furniture stands a chance. From about four months, softer chews like rabbit ears, fish skins and chicken wings are right. Antler and hoof are not, and will not be until the adult teeth are properly through. Supervise every one, and take it away once it is small enough to swallow whole.

Joint Care

25 chews

Cartilage-rich chews carrying the compounds people usually buy by the tub.

Shop joint care
Why it works, and who it suits

Trachea, tendon, chicken feet and paddywack are connective tissue, and connective tissue is where naturally occurring glucosamine and chondroitin live. We are not going to pretend a chew is a treatment, and a dog with diagnosed arthritis needs a vet rather than a shopping list. But if you are buying chews anyway, choosing the ones made of cartilage costs nothing extra and is a sensible default for an older or a larger dog.

Oil-rich chews, mostly fish, that show up in the coat rather than in the moment.

Shop skin & coat
Why it works, and who it suits

Fish skin is the obvious one: naturally oily, and full of the fatty acids that keep skin supple and a coat glossy. This is a slow benefit and the honest unit is weeks rather than days. Worth the patience for a dog with a dry, flaky or tired-looking coat. As it happens these are among the leanest chews we sell, so it is a benefit you can add without adding weight.

Omega-3

10 chews

The chews with a genuinely useful omega-3 content, almost all of them fish.

Shop omega-3
Why it works, and who it suits

Omega-3 is the fatty acid dogs cannot make for themselves, and it turns up in skin, coat, joints and cognitive function all at once. Oily fish is the best natural source there is. Only a handful of ours carry it in a quantity worth mentioning, which makes this a small collection but a precise one, and an easy addition for a dog already eating fish.

Immune System

10 chews

Organ and offal chews, dense in the vitamins and minerals immunity actually draws on.

Shop immune support
Why it works, and who it suits

Organ meat is the most nutrient-dense part of any animal, carrying vitamin A, B vitamins, iron and zinc at levels muscle meat never reaches. Only a handful of chews qualify. The claim here is a modest one and it is going to stay modest: a varied diet with some offal in it supports a dog's general health better than a monotonous one, and that is as far as anybody honest will take it.

Brain Health

13 chews

Chews with the fats and nutrients linked to cognitive function, plus the act of chewing itself.

Shop brain health
Why it works, and who it suits

Two things are going on here. Nutritionally, the omega fats in fish and the nutrients in organ meat are the ones associated with cognitive function, which matters most at both ends of a dog's life. Behaviourally, chewing is self-soothing and lowers arousal, which is why a chew is such a useful thing to hand over before the fireworks start rather than after.

Deworming

8 chews

Furred and hairy chews with a long folk history of discouraging intestinal worms.

Shop deworming
Why it works, and who it suits

This is the smallest collection on the site and the one to be most careful about. Every chew here keeps its fur, and the theory is an old one: the hair passes through undigested and takes passengers out with it. It is a pleasant enough thing to give a dog and there is no harm in it. It is not a wormer. If you think your dog has worms, your vet has something that actually works, and these sit alongside it rather than instead of it.

Straight answers

The questions people actually ask

The things people ask us before they buy, answered without the waffle.

Which chew cleans teeth best?

A hard chew the dog has to gnaw at for a long time: antlers, hooves and yak chews come top.

It is all mechanical: the chew has to be firm enough to scrape and last long enough to keep scraping. Nothing replaces brushing, but a hard chew most days makes a visible difference along the back teeth, and it is the one bit of dental care your dog will not hide from.

All 46 dental chews →

What lasts the longest?

Antlers, hooves and beef pizzles, in that order, for a medium dog chewing steadily.

Density is what buys you the time. Antler is bone, hoof is compressed keratin, and both take genuine effort to wear down. Ears and skins are gone in minutes by comparison, which is exactly right when minutes is what you were after.

All 38 long-lasting chews →

What is a pizzle?

A dried bull penis, and one of the most popular chews we sell.

It is pure muscle, high in protein, fully digestible and it softens as the dog works at it rather than splintering. The name puts people off for about a week. Then they buy it monthly.

Shop pizzles →

Which chews suit a sensitive stomach?

Single-protein, single-ingredient chews with nothing sprayed, glazed or added.

Pick one protein your dog has never eaten, rabbit or duck or fish, run it for a fortnight and watch. Elimination is dull, slow and completely unglamorous, and it is still the only method that tells you anything.

All 37 hypoallergenic chews →

Are natural chews high in protein?

Yes, unusually so: crude protein across our range runs from 20.8% to 86.4%.

Dried meat, tendon and muscle are close to pure protein once the moisture has gone, and about a third of ours sit in the very high band. Good news for most dogs, and something to keep an eye on for one on a restricted diet.

All 87 high protein chews →

Can puppies have natural chews?

Yes, from around four months, as long as the chew is softer than an adult one.

Avoid antler and hoof until the adult teeth are fully through, supervise every session, and take the chew away once it is small enough to swallow whole. Puppies are enthusiastic and have no judgement whatsoever.

The seventeen chew types

What is a pizzle? And a paddywack, a snout, a hoof?
